What we test
This is the most common way people waste money on a no-start. A parts counter tests the battery, sells you a battery, and two weeks later you are stranded again because the alternator was never charging it. We test all three parts of the system separately so the answer is the right one the first time.
Cranking amps measured under real load against the rating stamped on the case, plus state of charge and internal resistance. A battery can read 12.6 volts sitting still and still collapse the moment the starter pulls on it.
Charging voltage checked at idle and under electrical load with the headlights, blower, and rear defroster on. We also check for AC ripple, which catches a failing diode before it kills the new battery you just paid for.
Amp draw measured while cranking. A starter pulling too much current drags the whole system down and mimics a dead battery exactly, which is why the free jump start at the parts store keeps working right up until it does not.
Corroded terminals and a bad ground strap cause more no-starts in Arizona than most people believe, and they cost almost nothing to fix. We check voltage drop across every connection rather than just looking at them.
If the battery keeps going flat overnight but tests fine, something is still drawing current with the key out. We isolate it circuit by circuit instead of selling you a third battery.
Many vehicles from roughly 2010 on need the new battery registered to the charging module, otherwise the car keeps charging to the old battery's profile and the new one dies early. We do that step. A lot of quick-swap places do not.
What it usually turns out to be

Usually the battery is too low to turn the starter, though a bad ground or a corroded terminal produces the identical sound for a fraction of the price.

Why October is battery season
Most people assume cold weather is what ends a battery. In Phoenix it is the opposite. Heat is what does the damage, because high underhood temperatures accelerate the chemistry inside the case and evaporate the electrolyte. A battery that sat through a Valley summer has lost real capacity even though it has been starting the car fine all along.
Then the first cool mornings arrive, cold thickens the oil, the engine needs more current to turn over, and the weakened battery finally cannot deliver it. That is why no-start calls spike here in October and November on damage that was done in July. Testing it now, before it strands you, costs nothing.

As a rule of thumb, if it will not start but runs fine once jumped, suspect the battery. If it starts fine and then dies while you are driving, suspect the charging system. We measure both rather than going on the rule of thumb.
In most cases yes, if you call during business hours and we have the group size in stock. Some vehicles take a battery we have to order, and some need the new battery registered to the charging module, which adds time. That is a parasitic draw, which means something in the car stays awake after you take the key out. A trunk light, a bad relay, an aftermarket stereo or alarm, or a module that will not go to sleep. It is a diagnostic job rather than a parts job, and buying another battery will not solve it.
